Cuthbert joins Orient

The O’s have snapped up their first player of the summer, with Swindon Town’s Scott Cuthbert joining the club.

The defender joins on a two-year deal from relegated Swindon. He started his career in Scotland with Celtic before loan spells with Livingston and St Mirren. He has also played for Scotland up to U21 level.

Cuthbert, 23, can operate at centre back and right back so seems to be an almost like-for-like replacement for the Oxford-bound Andy Whing.

Whilst obviously his performances last season suffered with Swindon being relegated from League One, Cuthbert played a big part in the previous season, guiding Swindon to the play-off final.

Whilst it may take some time to really judge Cuthbert’s performances as he slots into a new team, on paper he seems like a good addition with experience of chasing the play-offs.

I would imagine he would start off offering cover and pushing for a starting spot behind recognised central defenders Ben Chorley and Terrell Forbes, whilst also giving Russell Slade another option at right back.

Cuthbert said on leytonorient.com: “The manager’s feeling really excited about the new season and after speaking to him, so am I. Staying in League 1 is great for me and I’m looking forward to getting stuck in now.

“That first season at Swindon was fantastic and it got me a lot of experience about being at the top of the division and pushing for the play-offs.

“Hopefully we can do the same this season at Leyton Orient and go one better than last year and get into that top-six.”

He was great for us in 2009/10 alongside Gordon Greer. However, it all went downhill after that. A surprising decline. If you have the right player by his side then you’ve got yourselves a very promising centre-back. I hope he does well with you.

We have two established centre backs at the club that I hope he can work well with them when needed, I would think he would come in as cover but be a good option at the back. Im sure I have heard good things about him so for us it seems to be a good signing.
