The news that keeper Jamie Jones has signed a new three-year contract with the club is both exciting and surprising.

After a fantastic year between the posts last season, Jones, 22, looked like he would be heading to a higher level with his contract running out this summer.

But earlier this week the news was announced of Jones’ long-term deal until June 2014. Whilst there was always a good chance that he could re-sign, the length of the deal is surprising. You don’t often see three-year deals on the table at the O’s, especially with players of Jones’ ability and potential.

A three-year deal offers Jones the security knowing that unless his form dips dramatically he will be number one at the club whilst for the fans it is fantastic knowing that we have a keeper of quality in goal for the foreseeable future.

It also promises to be good business for Orient and Barry Hearn as another season like the last and Jones could command a reasonable fee if he leaves before the end of the three years.

Jones told leytonorient.com: “I’m delighted to agree my new contract with the club. It’s nice to be offered such a long-term deal and it shows what the people at Leyton Orient think of me.

“There were options elsewhere for me, but I decided between me and my family that the new contract here was what I wanted and I’m really happy to have committed my future to the club.

“It’s an exciting time to be at the club. We had a great second half of last season and now we want to go one better by breaking into the top six.”

Ahead of next season it is good to tie down another key player’s contract, with the O’s now waiting to hear on whether Jimmy Smith will sign a new deal.

Jones’s signing will also help plan Slade’s spending this summer as having both senior keepers Jones and Lee Butcher committing their futures’ to Orient is a big boost.
