Two goals in two minutes was enough for The Cherries to win their first home game of the season against a very poor Orient side. The Cherries had numerous chances to win the game against an Orient side that offered no fightback.
With Scott Wagstaff taking his place in the starting XI after his loan move from Charlton Athletic was confirmed on Friday. Wagstaff was returning to Dean Court having had a similar loan at The Cherries. The Charlton loanee wasn’t the only man facing his old side as Michael Symes and Mathieu Baudry were involved in the Orient side whilst Charlie Daniels and Lee Barnard were in the Bournemouth side with Dennis Rofe, another ex-O, in charge of his final game for Bournemouth.
After deciding against travelling to the South Coast to watch Russell Slade’s side park the bus I was reduced to watching a subdued Soccer Saturday and refreshing the clubs twitter feed to find out the latest action from Dean Court.
Just over 10 minutes into the game and the official Orient Twitter account had tweeted ‘Bournemouth have dominated possession so far.’ A tweet that I’m told could have been tweeted during any of the 90 or so minutes.
Another tweet ten or son minutes later had confirmed my thoughts that we had entered Dorset to park the bus in front of Ryan Allsop’s goal was that of ‘With Bournemouth still in the ascendancy, Orient have bolstered their midfield, dropping Wagstaff into the right with Cox drifting inside.’ Slade had gone back to his favoured 4-2-3-1 formation with Dean Cox in the hole behind the lone striker, which was the immobile Michael Symes.
Minutes before half time saw the home side heap more pressure on Slade’s men when it was tweeted that the home side had three corners in quick succession with only Nathan Clarke and Ben Chorley keeping the home side at bay and keep the score level at half time.
After the break there was another interesting tweet, this time ‘Similar pattern at the start of the second half, Bournemouth seeing all of the ball and Orient content to let them play in front of them.’
The home side finally broke Orient down on 65 minutes through Lewis Grabban. Simon Francis’ corner took a deflection from Grabban and past Allsop in the Orient goal.
Two minutes later and it was two, this time from Marc Pugh. Ryan Allsop rolled the ball out to Nathan Clarke, who then slipped and Pugh capitalised. Slade vented his fury after the game slating both Allsop and Clarke saying that he told both not to roll the ball out.
At this point, at 2-0 down and having offered nothing up to the 67th minute, Slade then made his first changes of the day. Ryan Brunt and Moses Odubajo came on to attempt to change the game.
Considering Orient had been as prolific in goal as James Scowcroft in an Orient shirt, there was no chance of any sort of comeback and that was confirmed by the Soccer Saturday staff at Dean Court as she said there had been no sign of any sort of Oriet comeback.
The stats after the game were astonishing. Bournemouth dominated in possession and had 16 shots, compared with Orient’s two and 7 of those were on target compared with Orient’s 1. The home side won 17 corners compared to Orient’s one.
Matt Porter after the game brushed off the performance and result by saying that we had Tuesday night to make up for the humiliating loss.
