Jay Simpson scored his first Orient goals as Leyton Orient defeated Dagenham & Redbridge 2-0 to progress to the next round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

The forward scored in either half to hand Kevin Nugent his first win as boss since taking temporary charge following Russell Slade’s resignation.

With the O’s reverting to a 4-3-3 formation, Darius Henderson spearheaded the O’s frontline with Shaun Batt and Jay Simpson playing either side of the target man.

Following a good start to the match Orient took the lead on the fifth minute when Batt slotted the ball through to Simpson on the right for the striker to open his O’s account with a cool finish.

Simpson was clearly enjoying himself after the goal and came close to grabbing a second two minutes later when his strike came crashing off the bar.

Orient continued to dominate proceedings for most of the first half and Simpson was again denied by the woodwork when his header came off the post before Dagenham’s Billy Bingham had an effort cleared off the line.

The O’s went into the break fully deserving of their lead and doubled their lead midway through the second half when substitute Dean Cox made an instant impact by sending in a cross to the box which caused problems before Simpson rifled in the loose ball to claim his second of the night.

The win will come as a relief to Kevin Nugent as he looks to seal a permanent role as O’s boss and get Orient back to winning ways in the league, starting at Sheffield United on Saturday.
