Orient succumbed to a 2-1 defeat at Roots Hall this afternoon having led for 56 minutes courtesy of Gary Alexander`s 22nd minute strike. Late goals from Freddy Eastwood and Gary Hooper gave Southend their third consecutive win during their pre-season warm up.

Orient took the lead on 22 minutes following a dreadful mistake from Simon Francis. The Southend right back was guilty of some amateurish defending which allowed Ibehre to turn the ball across for Alexander to smash home. Orient took the lead and could have been ahead before that with Matt Lockwood`s free-kick crashing back off the crossbar from some thirty yards.

Despite trailing, the hosts were still in the game and were unfortunate when Eastwood hit a post after earlier having had goal disallowed for offside.

Following the customary substitutions at half time, mainly from Orient, Southend started to assert some sort of dominance as it was they that found more of a rhythm to their game. Yet, Orient could have stretched their lead as Lee Steele found himself through on goal, only for the O`s striker to screw his shot wide of the post. Shane Tudor was next to try his luck but his wonderful chipped effort was somehow scrambled off the line in spectacular fashion.

Orient were made to pay for their prolificacy in front of goal as Southend`s main man, and in honesty, only real threat in the game, brought the Shrimpers level with a classy goal. The former Grays striker smashed home from 20 yards after a clever run to give the Blues an equaliser.

Orient responded well to the goal and in fact could have re-taken the lead when Joe Keith saw his shot blocked on the line. However, it was the hosts that were to have the last laugh as Brian Saah failed to respond to a quickly taken free kick which allowed Hooper all the time in the world to pick his spot and place the ball through Garner`s legs to hand Southend victory.
