Leyton Orient’s journey in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy came to an end as they lost 1-0 to Gillingham.

John Egan’s 79th minute header proved to be the difference to deny the O’s a place in the Southern Area Final.

The O’s edged a tight first half in which Shane Lowry and Gianvito Plasmati came close but neither were able to find the breakthrough at the half ended all square.

Gary Sawyer impressed in the absence of Andrea Dossena and the full-back’s delivery from the left was a constant threat with Bradley Pritchard poking an effort wide with just over 20 minutes remaining.

That was to be the closest the O’s came however as on the 79th minute John Egan headed home a corner to fire the Gills into the next round of the cup.
