Orient’s New Years Eve clash with Charlton Athletic has been chosen for live coverage for the third time in as many years, this time with the game taking place at 5.20pm on New Years Eve.

It is the third time that this clash with the South London side has been televised, with both sides winning one game each.

In January 2010 on a frozen Monday night, Orient unexpectedly triumphed against the Addicks at The Valley. I remember making up a ‘dentist appointment’ to get me away from college and clutching a lager at a London Bridge pub and expecting nothing from the game. However, myself and the travelling Orient contingent were treated to a fantastic display and valuable three points by The O’s. A Scott McGleish goal was enough to settle that game, in which David Mooney played 67 minutes for Charlton, whilst Elliot Omozusi and Matt Spring sat on the Addicks bench.

Last season’s televised clash took place at Brisbane Road, in much better conditions then the first game. This time a warm Friday night in early August, the Charlton side triumphed despite playing much of the second half with ten men. An Alan McCormack goal put the away side ahead before another McGleish goal against his first club put Orient back into the contest. Christian Dailly saw red for a late challenge but Orient could not break down the strong Charlton defence even with a very strong claim for a penalty as McCormack handled the ball. Goals from Scott Wagstaff and Chris Solly gave Charlton a lucky 3-1 win, much to the annoyance of Orient fans, who like myself, thought Orient were good value for a point.

For many the New Years’ Eve clash will begin a long night off drinking, lets hope come midnight, we’re celebrating the New Year with three points in the bag against Charlton.
