Leyton Orient will sit one spot off the bottom of League One on Christmas day after losing 2-0 at Barnsley.

Fabio Liverani’s first away game ended the same as the first, with Orient being made to pay for their errors.

Barnsley manager Danny Wilson was celebrating his 1,000th game as manager and top scorer Conor Hourihane gave him the perfect gift. The midfielder broke the deadlock on the 13th minute when he latched on to a Kane Hemmings’ pass and rounded Adam Legzdins before sliding the ball into the net.

With seven minutes of the first half remaining Orient then fell further behind. Scott Cuthbert’s pass to Elliot Omozusi was intercepted by Dale Jennings and the winger set up Devante Cole to double the hosts advantage.

Orient offered no real threat going forward but were handed a lifeline with just over 15 minutes remaining when Barnsley goalkeeper Ross Turnbull was sent off for handling outside the box.

The O’s were unable to push on from that however and drop to 23rd in League One, only avoiding Crewe in last spot by goal difference.
