The Leyton Orient run in the League Cup is over for another year after the first round defeat against Fulham at the Matchroom Stadium on Tuesday.

A late Orient fight back wasn’t enough with the lead Championship side Fulham had proving enough with the O’s bowing out of the League Cup after a three-two defeat.

Fulham’s teenage debutant Dennis Adeniran put the visitors ahead just ahead of half time.

A double from Cauley Woodrow in three-minutes, early in the second half, left Fulham three-up and in complete control of the tie.

Paul McCallum pulled one back with a little under 20-minutes to play with his second giving Orient hope of a dramatic comeback with nine-minutes to go but the O’s couldn’t quite find a leveller.

Here’s a round up of the League Cup action from the other matches played, with some still to take place.

Quite an opening night to the first round of the League Cup (EFL Cup as it’ll be known this season) with a number of lower league sides holding their own, in fact beating higher league opponents!

Others, expected to progress, did.

The most dramatic match of the night on Tuesday was probably the Accrington over Bradford. After a nil-nil draw on the night League 2 side Stanley then ran out 11-10 winners on penalties.

Real upsets on Tuesday were wins for Cambridge over Sheffield Wednesday (two-one), Exeter’s one-nil win over Brentford and Stevenage’s win at Portman Road (one-nil) against Ipswich, that seeing League 2 sides knockout opponents from the Championship.

Another from League 2 level to beat a Championship side were Morecambe. The ‘game of the night’ saw the Shrimps win a nine-goal thriller as they ran out five-four winners against Alan Stubbs’ Rotherham at the New York Stadium.

League 1 wins over Championship sides included an Oxford (one-nil) win at Birmingham, Oldham knocking out Wigan (two-one) and Shrewsbury’s two-one win over Huddersfield. The standout League 2 wins over League 1 being Blackpool’s four-two win over Bolton, returning Football League side Cheltenham beating Charlton one-nil, a surprising Sheffield United exit to Crewe (two-one) and Walsall being seen off two-nil by visiting Yeovil.

No problems for the likes of Brighton (four-nil), Blackburn (three-one) and Millwall (four-nil) who all came through potential ‘banana skins’ on matches against Colchester, Mansfield and Barnet, respectively, without too much concern.
